Pantothenic Acid is another name for Vitamin B5. Vitamin B5 can be found in abundance in many different types of food. It's also one of the most beneficial vitamins you can take. In fact, it's impossible for a person to consume less B5 vitamin than they need. In essence, a Vitamin B5 deficiency is practically unheard of. Because of this, there's no established recommended daily amount of Vitamin B5. Although there has never been a need to calculate a recommended daily allowance for it, Vitamin B5 is vital for a healthy body and mind.

A major role of vitamin B5 is metabolizing fats and carbohydrates into energy.

Some amount of Vitamin B5 can be found in nearly every food whether it is animal or vegetable. Some sources of Vitamin B5 are definitely better than others, but a balanced diet will provide more than enough. Some of the food with the most Vitamin B5 are meats, salmon, eggs, beans, milk and whole grains. It's worth noting that Vitamin B5 is usually lost when grains are milled into flour. As a result, bread, pasta, rice, most breakfast cereals, and baked goods are not a sufficient source of B5.

Combining Vitamin B5 with several other B Vitamins yields the best results. The combination of Vitamin B5 with Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), and Pyridoxine (B6) seems to be the most effective. This combination of B Vitamins plays a vital role in many bodily processes. Probably the most important of these functions is the process of converting food into energy to be used by the body. This process is called the Kreb's Cycle. By definition, the Kreb's cycle is part of a metabolic pathway involved in the chemical conversion of carbohydrates, fats and proteins into carbon dioxide and water to generate a form of usable energy. Vitamin B5 is essential to this process.

Interestingly, Vitamin B5 is also considered to be helpful in reducing stress. As a result of its effectiveness in helping relieve stress, B5 has been given the nickname "the anti-stress vitamin". The basics of how this vitamin helps with stress reduction deal with the production of stress reducing hormones by the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands produce adrenaline and cortisol, and Vitamin B5, along with Folic Acid (B9) and Vitamin C are necessary for the adrenal glands to function properly.

As a final note about this vitamin, it has been shown to help with the removal of toxins from the body.

Most of us have no problem getting all the B5 we need from the food we eat, so there's no need to panic. If you want to take supplements, go for it! There are no adverse effects to consuming too much Vitamin B5.

Your eyes are precious gift and should last a lifetime. But unfortunately, many people take their sight for granted. The reality is that most people do not believe that they are at risk for developing eye problems. And ironically, the bulk of those appear to the 78,000,000 Baby Boomers who are actually in the highest risk category. And to make matters even worse, a great majority of "graying" America does not even get regular eye screenings even if they have a family history of eye disease. Most are also totally unaware of the factors that may increase their susceptibility for developing eye problems.
Today, virtually the entire medical community is in total agreement that everyone is at risk for eye health problems. So here are a few common-sense health rules to support healthy eyes.Don't smoke...and if you do, stop. Smoking exposes your eyes to high levels of oxidative stress. And while the connection to age-related macular degeneration has not been clearly identified, it is known that smoking increases your risk.Exercise...it improves circulation and helps keep eyes moist, clear and functional. Have an eye examination every two years. Much like mammograms or stress tests, detecting eye problems at an early stage is crucial to preventing further damage.Wear protective glasses while playing sports.Take periodic breaks from the computer or from other close work to relax your eyes.
It's time the 'Baby Boomer' generation, who are now in their 50s and 60s, became more serious about eye health and age-related vision impairment problems because if left undiagnosed or untreated they could cause permanent dysfunction.
Obviously, age-related eye disease can seriously affect your quality of life and well-being. Vision impairment makes it more difficult for older adults to live independently and face the challenges of everyday living. Plus, failing vision increases the risk for accidents and falls. Impaired vision may also reduce a person's capacity to develop and maintain relationships and to participate in various activities, which can then lead to depression and social isolation. But what you may not realize is that with diminished vision, you may also have cognitive impairment or problems with thinking, learning and memory, according to a study in the Archives of Ophthalmology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
Nutrition plays a vital part in the health and care of our eyes. Certain vitamins, minerals, and herbs are generally known to support, protect and preserve healthy vision. Not only is a healthy diet important for immediate and long-term eye health, but several research groups are studying these nutrients to see how much of a role they have in reducing the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.
Antioxidants Vitamins A, C and E play a vital role in eye health along with other important nutrients.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is found abundantly in food sources that contain carotenoids, the red and yellow pigments in plants and animals which act as antioxidants. Certain carotenoids, such as lutein and zeaxanthin are found in large amounts in the lens and retina of our eyes.
Science Daily (December 6, 2004) reported a study from Ohio State University that provides evidence from laboratory experiments done on human lens cells showing that lutein and zeaxanthin, help to protect the cells from exposure to ultraviolet light, a leading cause of cataract formation.
Vitamin A is currently being studied for its role in assisting the body in reducing the risk of night blindness and the risk of blindness from macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the world.
Sources of Vitamin A include liver, butter, squash, peaches, apricots, broccoli, spinach, yellow peppers, bilberries, the yellow of eggs and of course, carrots.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that assists the body in reducing the level of protein buildup in the eyes which may lead to blurring of vision. Without adequate supply of Vitamin C, studies show that eye vision may begin to deteriorate. It is interesting to note that the concentration of vitamin C in the vitreous humor (the clear liquid in the eyeball) is about twenty-five times more than the concentration of Vitamin C in our blood. It is 100 times more in the retina.
Citrus fruits, berries, peppers, tropical fruits, are good sources of Vitamin C.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant working to counter the effects of oxidation on the tissues and structure of the eyes. Much research is underway to see whether Vitamin E may nutritionally support ocular health by helping to reduce or retard the risk-potential of cataracts and macular degeneration (AMD).
Sunflower seeds and nuts are good sources of vitamin E.
B-Complex Vitamins
B-Complex Vitamins are associated with eye health. Studies have theorized that a deficiency of B-complex may result in light sensitivity, paralyzed eye muscles, itching, burning, blood shot, and watering eyes.Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) is important for eye metabolism.Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) affects the mucous membranes and helps keep the tissues in the eyes and nose moist. Sweetener Explodes Internally A Natural Alternative

If there were a contest for the best example of total disregard for human life the victor would be McNeil Nutritionals - makers of Splenda. Manufacturers of Vioxx and Lipitor would tie for a very distant second.

McNeil Nutritionals is the undisputed drug-pushing champion for disguising their drug Splenda as a sweetener. Regardless of its drug qualities and potential for side-effects, McNeil is dead set on putting it on every kitchen table in America. Apparently, Vioxx and Lipitor makers can't stoop so low as to deceptively masquerade their drug as a candy of sort. There is no question that their products are drugs and by definition come with negative side-effects. Rather than sell directly to the consumer, these losers have to go through the painful process of using doctors to prescribe their dangerous goods.

A keen student in corporate drug dealing, McNeil learned from aspartame and saccharine pushers that if a drug tastes sweet then let the masses eat it in their cake. First though, you have to create a facade of natural health. They did this using a cute trade name that kind of sounds like splendid and packaged it in pretty colors. Hypnotized, the masses were duped instantly. As unquestionably as a dog humps your leg, millions of diabetics (and non-diabetics) blindly eat sucralose under the trade name Splenda in place of real sugar (sucrose).

Splenda was strategically released on April fools day in 1998. This day is reserved worldwide for hoaxes and practical jokes on friends and family, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible. McNeil certainly succeeded.

The splendid Splenda hoax is costing gullible Americans $187 million annually. (1) While many people "wonder" about the safety of Splenda they rarely question it. Despite its many "unknowns" and inherent dangers, Splenda demand has grown faster than its supply. No longer do I have to question my faith in fellow Man. He is not a total idiot, just a gullible one. McNeil jokesters are laughing all the way to the bank.

Splenda is not as harmless as McNeil wants you to believe. A mixture of sucralose, maltodextrine and dextrose (a detrimental simple sugar), each of the not-so-splendid Splenda ingredients has downfalls. Aside from the fact that it really isn't "sugar and calorie free," here is one big reason to avoid the deceitful mix...Think April fools day:

Splenda contains a potential poison

Splenda contains the drug sucralose. This chemical is 600 times sweeter than sugar. To make sucralose, chlorine is used. Chlorine has a split personality. It can be harmless or it can be life threatening.

In combo with sodium, chlorine forms a harmless "ionic bond" to yield table salt. Sucralose makers often highlight this worthless fact to defend its' safety. Apparently, they missed the second day of Chemistry 101 - the day they teach "covalent" bonds.

When used with carbon, the chlorine atom in sucralose forms a "covalent" bond. The end result is the historically deadly "organochlorine" or simply: a Really-Nasty Form of Chlorine (RNFOC).

Unlike ionic bonds, covalently bound chlorines are a big no-no for the human body. They yield insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides - not something you want in the lunch box of your precious child. It's therefore no surprise that the originators of sucralose, chemists Hough and Phadnis, were attempting to design new insecticides when they discovered it! It wasn't until the young Phadnis accidentally tasted his new "insecticide" that he learned it was sweet. And because sugars are more profitable than insecticides, the whole insecticide idea got canned and a new sweetener called Splenda got packaged.

To hide its origin, Splenda pushers assert that sucralose is "made from sugar so it tastes like sugar." Sucralose is as close to sugar as Windex is to ocean water.

The RNFOC poses a real and present danger to all Splenda users. It is risky because the RNFOC confers a molecule with a set of super powers that wreak havoc on the human body. For example, Agent Orange, used in the U.S Army's herbicidal warfare program, is a RNFOC. Exposure can lead to Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkins lymphoma as well as diabetes and various forms of cancer! Other shocking examples are the war gas phosgene, chlordane and lindane. (2) The RNFOC is lethal because it allows poisons to be fat soluble while rendering the natural defense mechanisms of the body helpless.

A poison that is fat soluble is akin to a bomb exploding internally. It invades every nook and cranny of the body. Cell walls and DNA - the genetic map of human life - become nothing more than potential casualties of war when exposed. Sucralose is only 25% water soluble. (3) Which means a vast majority of it may explode internally. In general, this results in weakened immune function, irregular heart beat, agitation, shortness of breath, skin rashes, headaches, liver and kidney damage, birth defects, cancer, cancer and more cancer - for generations! (1)

McNeil asserts that their studies prove it to be safe for everyone, even children. That's little assurance. Learning from the Vioxx debacle (and many others highlighted in my book Health Myths Exposed) which killed tens of thousands, we know that studies can be bought and results fabricated.

Some things are worth dying for. Splenda is not one of them. What people think of as a food is a drug or slow poison - little distinction there. It wouldn't be wise to bet your health on it. If safe, sucralose would be the first molecule in human history that contained a RNFOC fit for human consumption. This fact alone makes sucralose questionable for use as a sweetener, if not instantly detrimental to our health. Only time will tell. Until then, Ill stick to the safe and naturally occurring stevia plant to satisfy my occasional sweet tooth in 2007.

Be forewarned though, as long as drugs can be legally disguised as sweeteners, watch out for drugs being disguised as vitamins...Oh wait, they are already doing that - think Lipitor.

Research has also shown that we all have a different recommended daily intake or need of essential vitamins, a group of thirteen important molecules that our bodies must get in order to function properly and not die.

Vitamin A, which belongs to the retinoid group of vitamins, is soluble in fat. Vitamin A can be found in many orange foods, such as carrots or squash. Experts recommend a daily dose of nine hundred to three thousand micrograms of Vitamin A; an overdose of Vitamin A can result in a disease known as hypervitaminosis A, which, among others can cause people to have yellow or orange skin. Individuals who lack Vitamin A can suffer from night blindness; in fact, doctors recommend that children consume a lot of carrots so that these children's eyes can develop properly.

Vitamin B1, or thiamine, is a water-soluble vitamin that is part of the B-complex group of vitamins. A debilitating disease called beriberi results when we take less than 1.2 milligrams of Vitamin B1 a day. So far, there is no upper limit for Vitamin B1 consumption.

Riboflavin, or Vitamin B2, is a member of the B-complex group and is also soluble in water. Like other B-complex vitamins, riboflavin functions in keeping the immune systemfunctioning. It has no derermined upper limit, although taking less than 1.3 milligrams of Vitamin B2 a day can result in a disease called ariboflavinosis. This again does not mean it can be taken in very large amounts necessarily as a supplement.

Another B-complex vitamin is niacin, or Vitamin B3. Water soluble and an immune system sustainer, niacin also functions in growth in young children. The allowable daily dose for Vitamin B3 is from sixteen to thirty-five milligrams; below this range, pellagra can result.

The water-soluble Vitamin B5, or pantothenic acid, is a B-complex member that not only functions to allow growth and immune system development, but can contribute to strength and energy as well. We are all required to consume at least five milligrams of Vitamin B5 each day; lower consumption can result in paresthesia, a numbness in certain extrematies of the body.

Pyridoxine, or Vitamin B6, also functions in proper growth and development, especially in young children. A water-soluble B-complex vitamin, pyridoxine must be consumed at a minimum of 1.3 to 1.7 milligrams a day; consumption of the vitamin beyond the hundred milligram mark is considered an overdose, and can result in some eye or perception disorders. Conversely, anemia can occur when the proper amounts of pyridoxine aren't consumed.

Vitamin B7, biotin, is another water soluble B-complex vitamin. Although no biotin-deficiency related diseases have been detected, we are required to consume at least thirty micrograms of Vitamin B7 every day as a minimum.

Folic acid, or Vitamin B9, is extremely important for developing children and pregnant mothers. This B-complex vitamin must be consumed at about four hundred to a thousand micrograms a day, or severe birth defects may result in pregnant mothers.

Cyanacobalamin, or Vitamin B12, functions in proper growth and development. About 2.4 micrograms of this water-soluble B-complex vitamin must be consumed each day. Anemia often results from Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is a highly important water-soluble essential vitamin that can be found in many fresh fruits and vegetables. Only ninety to two thousand milligrams should be consumed each day, or kidney damage can result. Vitamin C deficiency results in scurvy, which is manifested in cracked skin and a damaged immune system.

Vitamins D, E, and K are similar in that they are fat soluble vitamins. Vitamin D helps in supporting the body's skeletal system by working alongside calcium; it also aids in boosting the immune system. At least fifteen milligrams of Vitamin E must be consumed each day; Vitamin E aids in cell regeneration and wound healing, and is often credited with bringing life and youth to skin. Finally, Vitamin K can helps in wound healing and aiding blood clotting.

All these vitamins can be obtained from a balanced diet that is filled with lean meats and fresh fruits and vegetables - or even a vegetarian or vegan diet. Always consult with your doctor or health care professional on what vitamins you should be taking in higher amounts. When you are trying to work at a low intensity, you need to monitor your heart rate. Most gyms these days come equipped with treadmills and exercise bikes that have built in heart rate monitors, so this won't be a problem. It normally takes about 5-10 minutes to reach the ideal heart rate...then you just want to continue working out at that level for 20-30 more minutes.

The High Intensity Cardio Workout

Want to burn the most amount of total calories in the shortest time? Try a high intensity cardio workout. This is definitely the tougher of the two types of aerobic exercises and is probably one of the many reasons it isn't as popular as the low intensity version. There is a great benefit to burning more total calories.

A foolproof way to lose weight is to burn more calories than what you consume each day. High intensity cardio is best for creating a calorie deficit, by burning a large amount of calories.

The Imperfections of The 2 Versions of Cardio Workouts

It takes about 10 minutes to get your heart rate into the fat burning zone, with the low intensity cardio workout. It is great once you reach this point, but those first 10 minutes or so are kind of a waste of time.

Very few people have the pain tolerance to push hard for more than 10-15 minutes. This is the challenge with high intensity cardio...it is miserable after 15 minutes!

A Great Cardio Workout That Combines Both Levels of Intensity

Why not start out at a high intensity level for the first 10-15 minutes and end with low intensity for 20-30 minutes? If you think of the two approaches...this completely makes sense! You are making the first 10-15 minutes of a low intensity cardio workout productive. Instead of wasting those first 10 minutes, you are burning a ton of calories...after 10 minutes you are burning a ton of body fat!

The way to accomplish this is find your favorite cardio machine...an elliptical machine, treadmill, exercise bike, etc. Start your workout by setting the machine at a tough level and maintain that level for 10-15 minutes. The idea is to have a tough time reaching the 10 minute mark. After 10 minutes, back down to an easier pace and maintain that pace for 30 minutes. You are now going to burn tons of calories, create a calorie deficit, as well as burn body fat directly. This is quickly becoming my favorite cardio workout, since it is so effective.

Vitamin B5 is also known as Pantothenic Acid. Vitamin B5 can be found in abundance in many different types of food. It's also one of the most beneficial vitamins you can take. In fact, it's impossible for a person to consume less B5 vitamin than they need. That means that there is little possibility that a person can have a B5 vitamin deficiency. Since everyone consumes more than enough Vitamin B5 from their normal diet, health professionals have never established a recommended daily allowance for it. Although there has never been a need to calculate a recommended daily allowance for it, Vitamin B5 is vital for a healthy body and mind.

Without Vitamin B5, it wouldn't be possible to turn foods like carbohydrates and fats into energy.

Some amount of Vitamin B5 can be found in nearly every food whether it is animal or vegetable. Of course some sources are better than others, but eating right will ensure you get all that you need. Some of the food with the most Vitamin B5 are meats, salmon, eggs, beans, milk and whole grains. Keep in mind that when whole grains are milled into flour, all traces of Vitamin B5 can be lost. Therefore, processed grain foods such as bread, pasta, rice, most breakfast cereals, and baked goods are not good sources of the vitamin.

Combining Vitamin B5 with several other B Vitamins yields the best results. The combination of Vitamin B5 with Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), and Pyridoxine (B6) seems to be the most effective. Along with these other B vitamins, Vitamin B5 is an integral part of a number of processes. This vitamin is involved in many of the body's energy-releasing chemical reactions. This is known as the Kreb's Cycle. By definition, the Kreb's cycle is part of a metabolic pathway involved in the chemical conversion of carbohydrates, fats and proteins into carbon dioxide and water to generate a form of usable energy. Vitamin B5 is essential to this process.

As a bonus, Vitamin B5 has also been shown to play a role in stress reduction. As a result of its effectiveness in helping relieve stress, B5 has been given the nickname "the anti-stress vitamin". The basics of how this vitamin helps with stress reduction deal with the production of stress reducing hormones by the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands produce adrenaline and cortisol, and Vitamin B5, along with Folic Acid (B9) and Vitamin C are necessary for the adrenal glands to function properly.

As a final note about this vitamin, it has been shown to help with the removal of toxins from the body.

Most everyone gets a sufficient amount of Vitamin B5 from their normal dietary intake, so supplements aren't usually necessary. If you want to take supplements, go for it! Taking extra Vitamin B5 has never been shown to be harmful.
